Design Strategies & Exploration
At this point, us students will advance the project to have a firm grasp of the three Ps: people, place, and project. We were expected to advance by independently investigating the project concept that the group in Project 1a provided, under the leadership of the instructor and the studio. We had to carefully examine the proposal's design concepts from a variety of perspectives, paying close attention to the form composition, efficacy, functionality, and spatial quality. The purpose of the design exploration is to use a number of schemes to examine, test, and challenge the concepts in order to reflect the designer's curious disposition and attitude.
'The Artisan's Whirl'
‘The Artisan’s Whirl’ - a learning hub where the heart of Ipoh’s craftsmanship draws people inward, akin to the pull of a whirlpool. As visitors wind through the curving paths, they are immersed in the sights, sounds, and textures of dying crafts being brought back to life. Each step toward the core reveals the legacy of artisans who’ve shaped Ipoh. Here, heritage is preserved not in stillness, but in movement - ever-turning, and ever-shared. The intention is to make people lose sense of time, almost as if they’re being hypnotized by the whirlpool’s spiral. It reinforces architecture as a ‘cultural conduit’, reigniting the memory of Ipoh by acting as a channel through which knowledge and tradition flow.
Reflection
P1B was a fun and eye-opening experience. I came into semester 06 knowing that i wanted to re-imagine my semester 04 design concept of ‘whirlpool’ in it’s most fulfilled form, as in semester 04, i don’t believe i gave justice to the incredible ‘whirlpool’ concept idea with my building. Luckily enough, our P1A was heavily involved with water & movement (super grateful for the Kinta River here) and i was able to strategically justify why the whirlpool idea is method to create an architectural intervention in Taman Jubilee. Although i was reluctant to go full-force with the idea, Mr. Prince really liked the concept from day 01, and pushed me to be dedicated to it. From then, i explored many different form strategies, even executing a form that was literally in the shape of a whirlpool. With tears in my eyes and a few kind words of rejection from Mr. Prince, i had to give up the idea of the whirlpool in massing blocks. Although i was distraught back then, i am very grateful he did this, as it forced to think of more creative, ‘out-of-the-box’ methods of executing my whirlpool. I remember the night i came home from that tear-jerking tutorial, i worked all night on a new idea, and luckily enough Mr. Prince loved it!
