Re-imagining the City’s Third Place
After the Schematic Design phase of Project 1b, we had to continue to create and finalise the Urban Room project's scheme. A completely established design plan that incorporates technology solutions, environmental initiatives, and technical resolution. The scheme must cover poetics, tectonics, sustainability, building safety compliance, façade, and aesthetic and presentation strategies. The calibre of work required of a final-year student should exhibit critical thinking abilities, structural awareness, environmental sensitivity, legal and regulatory compliance, and a high degree of impact and exploration.
'The Artisan's Whirl'
The Artisan’s Whirl is an artisanal learning hub located in the heart of Ipoh City Centre, harnessing the hidden craftsmanship of Ipoh to draw people inward, akin to the pull of a whirlpool. Speared by Ipoh’s 2035 Development Plan of ‘re-activating public spaces’, it strategically shifts the tourism focus to Ipoh’s authentic cultural elements while simultaneously benefiting the locals, especially the seniors, who to this day, still rely on their dying traditional crafts for a living.

Reflection
After P1B, i had so so so much fun developing my design to what is it today. I feel that i had already accomplished the hardest parts of my design in P1B, and now i had a lot of time to refine my details and truly craft the user spatial journey. That being said, i did struggle a bit with the finer details of things, such as my whirlpool paths cutting through different spaces, etc, but with help from Ms. Alina and Mr. Prince, i was able to effectively finalize my design. As i continued design, i began to see certain things from my previous semester projects naturally appear in my final design, almost as if it was a physical accumulation of all of my knowledge throughout this entire degree. The elegant curves from semester 02's building, the roof pond from semester 03, the ‘whirlpool’ idea & moving water from semester 04, and a staggered form execution from semester 05. I didn’t even notice this until Mr. Prince pointed it out to me, and it was a full circle moment that left me feeling very emotional, as without me even knowing, i paid homage to all my hard work and dedication from previous semesters. All in all, i truly believe that the Artisan’s Whirl speaks to it’s site. It is a building that cannot be made to fit in any other site, both tangibly and intangibly.
