II

Architectural Design Strategy

For the second assignment, we had to deduct a position for identifying architecture and developing architectural design strategies for an Urban Heritage Gallery in Pudu. This project will reflect on the issues and inspirations from Project 1a to enhance the city's character, continuity, quality of public space, ease of movement, legibility, flexibility, and variety.

'A Renaissance of the Forgotten'

Pudu is a multi-faceted town in the midst of KL, with many of its socio, economic, & cultural factors bearing characteristics that almost directly contradict each other. Whether it's tradition vs modernity, authenticity vs development, positive or negative perception, Pudu is very polarizing, as it's a place where seemingly opposing elements coexist. These opposing & contrasting elements contribute to Pudu's unique charm and allure. However, these paradoxical traits create an increasing gap between the ‘old’ and ‘new', which has taken a toll on Pudu’s longest standing community - the elderly, due to their lack of ability to keep up with today’s ever-changing world.

“What if adapting to the future didn’t mean we have to sacrifice the past, and both can co-exist?”

Reflection

Project 1 was relatively a difficult one to complete, as we had such a short period of time. Not only did we have to come up with the structures, we also had to conduct research, create poems, study precedents, poetic architecture, concentric & linear architecture, and so much more. It was so draining to lead and be responsible for a large group of people while also tackling the project.  In addition, I found myself having to complete my group's delegated tasks because i didn't have the heart to tell them their work was rejected by our tutors. Overall, i am grateful to have been placed in such a competent group, and i am satisfied with our end product.
