Designing with Architectural Principles & Materiality

Using the architectural principles from project 1, we had to craft a tropical rainforest discovery pavilion which provides users with a spatial experience. We explored the usage of materials, textures, & lighting to enhance the spatial qualities

Intentions

Grid, at its core, is a principle conventionally utilized to eradicate any form of misunderstanding in a space. How can we use the antonym of our goal of causing confusion to enhance its impact? Here, the repetitive nature of grid, and repetition of other elements such as void, staircases, & solid is applied to encapsulate disorientation. These repetitive elements prevent the user from discerning their position in the structure, due to the lack of any distinguishable start & end. The user experiences varying levels of confusion throughout the structure, depending on the certain area & its light intensity.

Reflection

Project 2 was very difficult for me at first. One of my groupmates was overseas, meaning me & my other groupmate had to bear a lot more workload. In addition, I initially had a lot of trouble understanding how to establish a spatial experience through architectural principles. However, my friends and my tutor Ms. Alia took their time to ensure I was on the right track, & I am very grateful for their help. The beginning was a very hectic, rocky time for me, however towards the end, I knew more and more what I was doing. I would describe this project as one of the key turning points for me as an architecture student, & I'll never forget it. I am proud of the outcome, and also how much knowledge I've gained whilst completing this project.
